Halo 4 Review (Originally Posted November 15, 2012)

Alright, so by now you've probably noticed I only review games I know I'm going to like, and this is no exception. Halo 4 is by far my favourite game of the year, completely trashing Borderlands and Assassin's Creed 3 for me.

I was ridiculously worried about 343 Industries taking over from Bungie, to the point I almost didn't get the game, but I heard the early reviews were all pretty positive, so I decided, what the hell?

343 does not disappoint. At all. They continue on 4 years after the end of Halo 3, Cortana waking the Chief and them getting to work. Apparently the truce between humanity and the Covenant has been broken, as the first enemy you see is an Elite wielding an energy sword, whom you promptly throw down an elevator shaft.

That's as far into the story as I'm going, because if you haven't already played this game, you need to, if you have, then you already know it.

The gameplay is classic Halo. You get guns, you kill things with those guns and you move to your objective. That hasn't changed. The new Forerunner weapons feel familiar but still have their own unique functions and the new Covenant and human weapons are a good addition.

I've never been a huge fan of FPS multiplayer, outside of Team Fortress 2. Consoles just don't have the same feel as a mouse and keyboard, but I have to admit, I've become more than mildly obsessed with the multiplayer in Halo 4. It's fun, fast and not ridiculously one sided. Most of the big team battle matches I join have been very close games, win or lose.

Flood is strangely fun, watching your numbers slowly turn as more and more of you get infected is somewhat terrifying.

Regicide looks extremely fun, I've spent all my time on BTB and Slayer so I haven't played it yet.

There's plenty of game types to keep you occupied if you're a multiplayer kind of person. The replacement for Firefight mode, Spartan Ops, is fun, in my opinion. I've seen a lot of complaints about it being recycled maps and repetitive objectives, but I still have a good time.

The leveling has been pretty fast, I'm at SR-34 after a few days of play. The loadout system is very useful and the new armor powers are fun.

In the end, I can't really think of much to say about the game other than to get it, play it and enjoy it. Also, fuck you 343 for that ending. Fuck you.
